CINCINNATI – Yu Darvish surrendered three home runs and was outdueled by Trevor Bauer on Friday night as the Chicago Cubs suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds.
After striking out the first three batters he faced at Great American Ball Park, Darvish (4-6), who was bidding to win two consecutive starts for the first time this season, allowed a go-ahead two-run shot to Aristides Aquino in the second inning.
Three of the four hits he gave up in his six-inning, 78-pitch outing were homers — the other two being solo shots by Eugenio Suarez and Joey Votto. He also struck out nine and walked none in a losing effort.
“Suarez and Votto made solid contact. I didn’t think Aquino’s would turn into a homer,” Darvish said.
“I think I did well other than the homers (I gave up). I wasn’t feeling well until yesterday. I’m still not in 100 percent condition, but I thought I’d do OK today.”
Darvish has given up 26 homers this season, one shy of his career worst in 2017.
Bauer (10-8), meanwhile, allowed just three hits and lasted seven innings. He struck out 11 and walked two.

In New York, Todd Frazier clobbered a tying three-run homer and Michael Conforto lined a game-ending single as the Mets stormed back in the ninth to stun Washington for their seventh straight win.
New York rookie Pete Alonso homered in his fourth straight game, hitting his 38th of the season off Stephen Strasburg.
Red Sox 16, Angels 4
In Boston, J.D. Martinez homered twice and just missed hitting a third out of Fenway Park, powering the Red Sox past Los Angeles.
The Angels’ Albert Pujols clubbed a three-run homer in the first. Teammate Shohei Ohtani was hitless in four at-bats.
Indians 6, Twins 2
In Minneapolis, Shane Bieber pitched into the eighth inning, Jose Ramirez had three hits and Cleveland pulled into a tie with the Twins for the AL Central lead.
