SEATTLE – Rookie Kyle Lewis broke up a no-hit bid with a home run for the second consecutive game, and the Seattle Mariners beat Sonny Gray and the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 on Wednesday night.
Just as he did on Tuesday night against the Reds’ Trevor Bauer, Lewis delivered Seattle’s first hit of the game with a towering homer. In Tuesday’s 4-3 win, Lewis hit a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning for his first career hit. On Wednesday, he sent Gray’s 105th pitch of the game into right field for a three-run homer in the seventh, his second major league hit.
Lewis was among four players called up Tuesday from Double-A Arkansas. The 193-cm prospect is quickly becoming a clubhouse favorite because of his timely hits and inspiring backstory after recovering from a catastrophic knee injury.
After hustling around the bases Tuesday night, Lewis admitted he tried to enjoy the experience Wednesday.
“I tried to make a point to slow down a little bit, jog, try to feel it out and feel the energy,” Lewis said. “That was really cool.”
Gray struck out nine against a lineup that included four rookies. He was rarely threatened, but was done in by a few long at-bats and a sloppy start to the seventh, when he hit Austin Nola with a pitch, then walked Kyle Seager.
The Mariners have been no-hit twice in 2019. No team has been no-hit three times in a season.
Gray was pulled after allowing a single to Daniel Vogelbach, one batter after Lewis. He matched his season high with 111 pitches in 6⅓ innings. It was his third career two-hit performance.
Nola and Seager added RBI hits in the eighth inning against reliever Kevin Gausman.
Marco Gonzales (15-11) struck out seven and allowed five hits in seven innings as he extended his career-best win total. He gave up an RBI double to Joey Votto in the third and a solo home run to Phillip Ervin in the fourth. He didn’t allow another hit.
Orioles 7, Dodgers 3
In Baltimore, Jonathan Villar hit a tiebreaking, record-setting three-run homer in the seventh inning as the Orioles beat Los Angeles and ended a six-game losing streak.
Villar’s drive off Caleb Ferguson (1-2) was the 6,106th in the majors this season, breaking the previous mark of 6,105 in 2017. The milestone shot came on a fastball that Villar sent deep into the left-field seats to snap a 2-2 deadlock.
Teammate Pedro Severino added a two-run homer in the eighth.
Nationals 6, Twins 2
In Minneapolis, Ryan Zimmerman homered and drove in three runs in support of Stephen Strasburg as Washington beat Minnesota for its third win in the last nine games.
Strasburg (17-6) gave up a two-run homer to Jorge Polanco in the third. He allowed only four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Trea Turner added a late home run and four relievers kept the Twins from scoring.
Indians 4, Angels 3
In Anaheim, Los Angeles’ Shohei Ohtani smacked his 18th home run of the year in a loss to Cleveland.
The designated hitter, batting in the No. 3 slot, cut the Angels’ deficit to two runs in the bottom of the fifth after crushing a deep shot to right center off Cleveland starter Adam Plutko.
“I reacted and connected well (on the home run),” said Ohtani, who went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts.
Kole Calhoun brought Los Angeles within a run with a solo blast in the eighth and Ohtani reached on a force out in the ninth, but was left stranded when Indians reliever Adam Cimber fanned Albert Pujols to close out the win.
Padres 4, Cubs 0
In San Diego, rookie Chris Paddack pitched six brilliant innings and the Padres dropped Chicago into a tie with Milwaukee for the second NL wild-card spot.
Manuel Margot homered off San Diegan Cole Hamels and also made a spectacular catch in center field.
Blue Jays 8, Red Sox 0
In Toronto, Trent Thornton and three others combined on a two-hitter and Teoscar Hernandez and Rowdy Tellez homered as the Blue Jays blanked Boston.
The slumping Red Sox have lost five straight. They had just four baserunners, and none advanced past second base.
