Rangers prevail against Angels in extra innings

The Los Angeles Angels squandered a six-run lead and lost to the Texas Rangers in their first trip back to the Lone Star State since pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room last month, falling 8-7 in 11 innings on Monday.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa brought home the winning run with a high-chop infield single off Noe Ramirez (4-2), scoring Jose Trevino and ending the Rangers’ four-game losing streak.

Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani extended the longest hitting streak of his career to 10 games with an RBI triple, then had a broken-bat line drive that turned into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the 10th. Ohtani, who went 2-for-4 with two walks, scored twice.

In the ninth, Ohtani drew one of three walks that loaded the bases for Rangers reliever Jose Leclerc, but did not bring home the go-ahead run after an inning-ending pop out from Luis Rengifo.

Albert Pujols’ 652nd career homer and 19th of the season capped a five-run first inning, and Los Angeles led 7-1 before Trevino’s first career homer and Scott Heineman’s first two big league RBIs got the Rangers closer.

Rafael Montero (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings.

Cardinals 3, Brewers 0

In St. Louis, Dakota Hudson and two relievers combined on a one-hitter, and Paul DeJong homered to lead the Cardinals over Milwaukee in a series opener between NL Central contenders.

Yasmani Grandal’s ground-rule double with two outs in the eighth inning off Giovanny Gallegos was the Brewers’ only hit. Hudson was lifted with two outs in the seventh after throwing 111 pitches, and Andrew Miller got four outs for his fifth save.

Hudson (12-6) matched a career high with seven strikeouts and walked four.

Nationals 13, Pirates 0

In Pittsburgh, Asdrubal Cabrera hit the last of Washington’s four homers and drove in five runs, and three relievers combined for 6⅔ innings of one-hit ball in a rout of the Pirates.

Adam Eaton, Matt Adams and Trea Turner also homered for the Nationals.

Mariners 9, Rays 3

In St. Petersburg, Florida, Tom Murphy homered twice and drove in four runs and Austin Nola also went deep and had three RBIs as Seattle beat Tampa Bay.

Padres 3, Reds 2

In Cincinnati, Francisco Mejia hit a solo homer off the foul pole, Manny Machado had an RBI single in the first inning and San Diego held on to beat Cincinnati.

Royals 5, Orioles 4

In Baltimore, Nicky Lopez and Nick Dini homered on successive pitches in the seventh inning and Kansas City stretched the Orioles’ latest losing streak to eight games.

Astros 5, Tigers 4

In Houston, Yuli Gurriel had two hits and drove in two runs as the Astros built a lead with a big first inning and held on to defeat Detroit.

White Sox 6, Twins 4

In Minneapolis, Jose Abreu smacked a three-run homer in a four-run second inning, helping Ivan Nova as Chicago defeated Minnesota.

Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 3

In Phoenix, Carson Kelly belted a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning, part of a three-run rally that sent the Arizona to a victory over Colorado.

Sale finished for season

The Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale is receiving treatment for inflammation in his elbow that will shut him down for the rest of the regular season, another blow to the defending World Series champions whose postseason hopes appear all but dashed.

Orthopedist Dr. James Andrews gave Sale an injection of platelet-rich plasma on Monday and said he will be re-evaluated in six weeks.

Looking beyond this frustrating season, the treatment could be good news for the club, which feared Sale might need Tommy John surgery. That would likely have cost him the 2020 season.

The 30-year-old Sale was coming off two solid starts in which he combined for 25 strikeouts — including the 2,000th of his career — and allowed only three runs in 14⅔ innings.
